It is FINALLY snowing in Tahoe, the one place in the country the polar vortex conveniently skipped (can’t say I’m too mad–going to the beach in January never gets old). It’s been completely barren at all of the resorts, despite the valiant efforts of all the snow-making crews. But now that it looks like winter has finally arrived, it’s time to hit the slopes! I’ve told you how much I love to eat, but haven’t really talked about it that much. So here we go, my first food post… and it’s dedicated to chicken!
As far as I’m concerned, chicken breast is the best thing you can eat if you’re trying to get in shape. Besides the fact that it’s delicious, it’s good-for-you lean meat (very low fat-to-protein ratio), and it’s really versatile. By itself, it’s fairly bland, but it’s a really good vehicle for spices and sauces. You can also add it to otherwise meatless dishes without changing the flavor of the dish to boost the protein content, which is good for muscle recovery and growth, and will keep you fuller longer (promise!). Every once in a while (OK, at least once per week), I have to force myself to go work out. It’s obviously not because I don’t like working out–I really, really do, or I wouldn’t have started this blog in the first place–but sometimes I just. don’t. wanna. Continue reading
Knowledge is power, especially in exercise. The more you know, I think, the better you can work out. And knowing your heart rate is one of those things that can affect your entire workout. Continue reading
I’ve expounded the joys of spinning to anyone who will listen, and have even dragged my mom and my best friend to classes (the boyfriend is next!). Spinning is AMAZING cardio – and it’s actually a really effective biking-specific training option, especially if you’re caught in the polar vortex and/or just don’t want to go outside. You’ll find that after a spinning session, everything is sore, even your upper body. Continue reading
You don’t need to have a gym to get a good workout. I do happen to have a gym membership; I really like it and would encourage you to get one. But I know that sometimes it’s just not convenient to where you work or live, or you just don’t want to spend the money, or you’re not anywhere near the gym. That’s happened to me on occasion, whether I’m traveling, or I only have an hour before I have to be somewhere and the gym is not an option. When that happens, I usually get annoyed and don’t have a good workout because I’m just pissed off at the world and just say, “screw it.” First tip: don’t do that, because it’s not good for you and it doesn’t burn any calories. The extra calorie burn from the elevated heart rate is negligible and will NOT counteract that bowl of ice cream you will definitely have to calm yourself down. Believe me, I know. Continue reading
Given the fact that I just posted about how awesome squats are, the title probably comes as a shock. But that’s not what I mean. I mean that I don’t believe in the philosophy of “only-work-one-specific-muscle-group day.” Continue reading
